The outdoor condenser and indoor air handler connect via refrigerant lines and electrical connections. During winter, the system extracts heat from outside air (yes, even when it’s cold) and delivers it indoors. In summer, it reverses to cool. Split Systems & Mini-Splits
Some homes lack ductwork or homeowners prefer individual room control. Split systems (also called ductless or mini-split heat pumps) consist of an outdoor compressor unit and one or more indoor wall-mounted heads. How Heat Pumps Heat in Winter When It’s Cold Outside
A heat pump doesn’t “create” heat from thin air. Instead, it uses refrigerant to extract residual heat energy from outside air, then compresses that energy and releases it indoors. Even air at 20°F contains usable heat energy. Modern heat pumps are efficient down to about 0°F; below that, a backup heating element (or auxiliary furnace) may engage on extremely cold days.

What Maintenance Does a Heat Pump Need?
